Mission:To help Portage County Adults develop basic math and English literacy skills necessary to achieve economic self-sufficiency and community integration.Services and ProgramsLocated in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, the Literacy Council offers Portage County adults and their families appropriate literacy instruction through volunteer tutors or small classes. Each learner is interviewed and assessed in the areas of reading, math or spoken English and a specific curriculum is designed to address identified needs. The Literacy Council is especially sensitive to those who have found weak English and math literacy skills to be a barrier to the achievement of personal and family goals. Learners with many different literacy needs are being served, including those who speak very little English, people with learning disabilities, and people with cognitive disabilities. Assessment, program development and instruction are provided at little or no cost to learners.
