The Portage County Literacy Council, Inc. held its Fourth Annual Team Scrabble Fundraising Event on April 3, 2008. It took place at the Holiday Inn on Highway 10 East. Every year Worzalla Publishing Co. has been an Event Sponsor and supported PCLC by encouraging additional corporate sponsors. The Holiday Inn, as Co-Event Sponsor, provided space and refreshments along with a cash bar.
In 2007, forty teams participated in the “un-Scrabble” Event. This year we had sixty one. We invite you to be a part of Team Scrabble 2009 as a Triple Word, Double Word, Triple Letter or Team Sponsor (please refer to the Sponsorship Levels sheet). Of course, we encourage you to join in the fun and play on a Scrabble team yourself, but if you prefer, you may also sponsor a team of four volunteer players appointed by you or PCLC. For example, this year several UWSP English majors played for sponsored teams.
We give prize baskets to top players at the end of the tournament. We rank all the teams after two rounds of play and divide them into four groups which have a first and second place prizewinner each. The group names are based on those you might have been given in first grade, such as Robin and Bluebird. All first place prize baskets are the same and may include books, gift certificates, trinkets, or any small prizes sponsors wish to donate. Second place prize baskets are similar to the first place baskets but contain slightly fewer items. We also welcome donations of useful items with company logos or gift certificates for door prizes. More significant prizes (valued at over $200), which we receive through donations, are given for raising extra money.
